All about Trailers

A trailer is a large transport vehicle that is designed to be non-powered so that it is hauled by a truck, an automobile, or tractor, which is used for hauling freight or used as a dwelling place or as an office. There are semi-trailers and full trailers and the difference between them is that a full trailer is fixed to a tractor whereas the semi-trailer is detachable. Both have their vantage points, but semi-trailers have more advantages and are more popularly used - they can be coupled or detached easily; if the tractor breaks down, the semi-trailer can be detached and coupled to another tractor; using a dolly, a semi-trailer can be attached to another semi-trailer; a semi-trailer is easy to reverse; they have longer cargo beds, therefore, they can transport longer loads; during winter, a semi-trailer tends to have more weight on the drive axles which giver=s betters traction and road handling.

There are other types of Tag Along Dump trailers found in the market today and these are: bicycle trailer, which is a motor-less, wheeled frame with a hitch system that is used for transporting cargo; construction trailer are mobile structures which are used as temporary offices, complete with facilities, or used as storage for building materials during a construction project; travel trailers are also called caravans or campers which are towed behind a vehicle and which serve as a temporary home or a place to stay for the traveler; motorcycle trailer is designed to carry a big load of motorcycles or designed to be pulled by a motorcycle to carry additional gear load; trailer winches are designed to load or unload boats and other cargo and they are made up of a ratchet mechanism and a cable; horse trailer or livestock trailer have similar uses and both are designed to haul horses or livestock like cattle.

The most important aspect in a trailer jack design is its stability, since a trailer has a tendency to scatter on a side-to-side motion. Aerodynamic forces are the main causes why the starting motion of trailers has a tendency to fritter away. Also, when the center of mass of a trailer is located behind the wheels, the trailer will likely be unstable. Therefore, for a trailer to be stable, the center of mass must be located in proportion to the number and weight of the wheels. The moment of inertia is also contributory to the instability of a trailer, such that a long load equates to a greater moment of inertia which can make the trailer unstable.
